Wauchope has a vast variety of retail stores servicing the town and surrounding areas, none being more important than the community owned and locally run, Hastings Co-operative.
The Hastings Co-operative Limited (More Info) was formed in 1916 and was formerly named The Upper Hastings Co-operative Dairying Company Limited. The local dairying industry at that time, was centred on the production of butter. The formation of the co-operative was in response to the coming of the railway which would expand the market for Hastings’ butter. The provisional and first Directors of the Co-operative’s Board were representatives of the settling families; Parker, Suters, Muscio, Graham, Warlters, Lindsay, Andrews and Black.
The first factory in Randall Street started production on 21st May 1917.
Over the years the Co-op has had its’ ups and downs, however it can lay claim to being one of the longest serving independent co-operatives in Australia and it is certainly the pinnacle community industry for Wauchope.
Today the Co-operative has over 8900 shareholders and millions of dollars in assets which return prosperity to the local community.
The Co-operative operates the major shopping outlets and those dedicated to the philosophy of the co-operative movement are pleased to say that there are no multi-national shopping corporations operating in Wauchope.
